Accessibility Statement

This accessibility statement applies to https://kentair.org.uk/ and its sub domain https://care-for-air.kentair.org.uk/ only. This is the website for Air Quality in Kent and Medway. It is funded Kent and Medway Air Quality Partnership.

Kent and Medway Air Quality Partnership want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. The website is run by Ricardo Energy and Environment. The website is largely compliant with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (known as WCAG 2.1), which is an internationally recognised set of recommendations for improving web accessibility. For example, that means you should be able to:

• Zoom in up to 300% without text spilling off the screen.
• Navigate most of the website using just a keyboard for the browsers Chrome, Edge and Firefox.
• Navigate most of the website using speech recognition software.
• Listen to most of the website using a screen reader.
• The contrast and font size of the page can be changed by adjusting the settings on the end user’s browser or computer.
• The charts have data accessible in addition to images.

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

• Background and foreground colours do not have a sufficient contrast ratio for air quality site summary statistics, but numbers are provided for user to read.
• Most older PDF documents are not fully accessible to screen reader software.
• Some icons do not have a description.
• The data for each chart is not accessible either via link or in a table except on data selector.
• The date picker on homepage elements does not have associated labels.
• You cannot skip to the main content when using a screen reader and keyboard.
• Some of the items in one form cannot be navigated to by using voice control.

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

Ricardo Energy and Environment is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the exemptions listed below. Where less important elements have the following issues, we have not fixed them due to the cost outweighing the benefits.

• Background and foreground colours do not have a sufficient contrast ratio on the Care for Air header, because of the current design used.
• Missing description for decorative images on homepage, it contains no air quality information.
• Some of our PDF documents are essential to providing our services. They were generated pre-2020.  We do not plan to replace existing published documents. We have started to use high contrast colours in map images and plan to use HTML formatting whenever possible.

We provide an alternative accessible way to provide the same information when air quality data and information are involved.

• Some elements do not have associated ARIA labels or role; the user cannot navigate using a screen reader.
• Some elements cannot be navigated using voice control.

How we tested this website

We used the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines V2.1 level AA to test how accessible this website is. We used software to test all pages, as well as manual tests for keyboard navigation and screen reader functionality.
